| Explaination | I personally do not believe that there is a conflict for myself as a commission member for the Appalachian States Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission and the American Board of Disaster Medicine. However, I feel compelled to note an employment conflict.
The duties and roles do not overlap directly. In addition, the Commission has no dealings with the American Board of Disaster Medicine.
The American Board of Disaster Medicine is responsible for the oversight, management and certification of physicians in Disaster Medicine. Its primary objective is to ensure board certified physicians have detailed understanding and proficiency in disaster / emergency response planning, operations and recovery from an all-hazards perspective. This includes knowledge and understanding nuclear, and radiation associated threats and events.
Whereas the Commission is responsible for monitoring the generation of low-level radioactive waste within the commission member states. In addition, a primary duty of the commission is to ensure appropriate storage of such waste. Thus, limiting and preventing undue public health risk of exposure with subsequent personal and community health threats and effects.
The indirect conflict, if it can be called a conflict, is that as Board Certified in Disaster Medicine, I am required to demonstrate an understanding nuclear and radioactive hazards and threats as well as real and potential health impacts on individuals and communities; in addition, to corresponding operational responses and directed medical treatments to prevent radiation induced disease or to medically manage individuals with radiation induced illnesses.
Therefore, as a board member required to develop certification questions, I am able to maintain a proficiency in the knowledge required to represent Maryland on the Commission.
Lastly, if a conflict ever would develop I have not compunction about explaing to the Commisson members, recusing myself as well as withdrawling from the meeting.
