| Explaination | I am an attorney and partner at the law firm of Venable LLP (“Venable”), which represents hundreds of individuals, businesses and entities throughout Maryland (“Venable’s Clients”). In the event that the Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority (“the Authority”) engages in business with, or is adverse to, any of Venable’s clients, I will recuse myself from those Authority matters, the firm will erect an ethical screen between myself and that client, and I will disclose Venable’s representation of that client to the Authority. The only such client that I am currently aware of is Elysian Park Planning, LLC d/b/a Canopy Team (“Canopy”). Venable began work for Canopy in June 2024, shortly before Canopy entered into a contract with the Authority. The work that Venable performs for Canopy is unrelated to Canopy’s contract with the Authority. I was unaware of Venable’s recent engagement with Canopy at the time that the Authority entered into a contract with Canopy, only recently learning that Canopy is a firm client. I have not been and will not be involved in any of Venable’s work for Canopy, and a screen has been established between me and anyone performing any work for Canopy. Although I will continue to work with Canopy in my role as Chairman, I will recuse myself from any contractual negotiations with Canopy on behalf of the Authority. |
